Standard & Non-Standard Words (SNSW)

SNSW:   SOLD

There are several words that are used incorrectly. The words from or from are often used incorrectly.

Example:

  • The proceeds from the sale of shares will be used to expand the business (incorrect).
  • The proceeds from the sale of shares will be used to expand the business area (true).

The (incorrect) sentence example above is incorrect because the word than should be used to compare two things. For example, "that writing is better than my writing". So in the (incorrect) sentence above, the word than should be removed.

Use of Paired Words

There are a number of words that are used in pairs (also called correlative conjunctions), such as either...or...not...but...not...but...between...and.

Example:

  • Both traders and consumers are still waiting for price certainty so that (wrong) buying and selling transactions do not occur.
  • Both traders and consumers are still waiting for price certainty so that no buying and selling transactions occur (true).

Use of Two Words

In reality, there is the use of two words that have more or less the same meaning and function. The use of two words simultaneously is not efficient. Words that are often used simultaneously, even in the same position, include, are, so that, for the sake of, such as, for example, or a list of names.

Example:

This quality improvement requires the involvement of experts in various scientific fields, such as medical experts, education experts, communication experts and others (wrong).

This quality improvement requires the involvement of experts in various scientific fields, such as medical experts, education experts, communication experts and others (true).

Connector between sentences and words

The word then often accompanies connecting expressions between sentences, such as in connection with that, therefore, therefore, thus, after that, therefore.

Example:

  • In this regard, research must be clearly limited so that its conclusions are reliable (wrong).
  • In this regard, a study must be clearly limited so that its conclusions are reliable (correct).

Prepositional Negation

In language use, people often omit the prepositional element that accompanies verbs.

Example:

  • Additional capacity depends on available facilities (wrong).
  • The increase in capacity depends on the learning facilities (correctly).
