Writing Error Analysis (WEA)

WEA:   SOLD

People often do not realize that the sentences they use are still on the border between active and passive forms. A statement is said to be active, but does not qualify as an active sentence, and is said to be a passive sentence, but also does not qualify as a passive sentence.

Active sentences are basic sentences, while passive sentences are a form of change from active sentences. The view of active and passive sentences is actually contrary to the framework of thinking about the relationship between subject and predicate, seen from the role played by the subject towards the action stated in the predicate.

So if the subject of a sentence is the doer of the action stated in the predicate, then the sentence is called an active sentence.

Example:

Some banks (S) provide convenience (p) for credit requests (O) to customers (K).

If the subject of a sentence does not act as an actor, but as the target of an action stated by the predicate, the sentence is called a passive sentence. Such a sentence is a change from an active sentence. This is done by changing the object element of an active sentence into the subject of a passive sentence.

Example:

Credit request facilities (S) are provided (P) by several banks (O) to customers (K).

Ungrammatical sentences are often found because of the many inappropriate uses of words. In composing sentences, carefulness is needed in choosing words, so that the resulting sentence meets the requirements as a good sentence.

Diction

The field of word selection is called diction. So this diction error includes sentence errors caused by incorrect word usage.
