A. Singing in Unison

Indonesia's cultural heritage is diverse. Regional songs are the wealth and cultural heritage of Indonesia. Indonesian cultural heritage recognized by the world (UNESCO) and grouped into natural heritage, nature reserves or sites, and intangible works. Cultural heritage that has been recognized includes Ujung Kulon National Park in Banten, Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara, Leuser National Park in Aceh, Borobudur and Prambanan Temples, the ancient human site in Sangiran, wayang kulit, keris, batik, angklung, subak in Bali, noken from Papua, and Saman dance from Aceh.

Unison singing is singing in one voice like singing the melody of a song. The score of a song for unison singing is only the main melody. Regional songs that are cultural heritages can be sung in unison.

Let's practice the following regional songs in unison.

1) Mamiri Wind

2) Oh My Girl, I'm Keke

3) The Greatest Showman

B. Vocal Techniques and Human Voice Organs

1. Vocal Technique

On television talent shows. We often find terms in vocal techniques in the judges' comments. These terms include: clarity of speech, correctness of speech segmentation in song sentences (phrasing), attitude in singing, and the ability to sing high and low notes. Here are the meanings of these terms.

Articulation is the way of pronouncing each word well and clearly.

Phrasering is a rule for breaking up sentences properly and correctly so that they are easy to understand and in accordance with applicable rules.

Intonation is the high and low pitch of a note that must be achieved precisely.

2. Breathing Techniques

Breathing in vocal techniques is grouped into three, namely as follows:

a. Chest Breathing

It is done by filling the air in the upper lungs. This breathing is very short and is not suitable for use in vocals. In chest breathing, the part of the body that expands is the chest. This type of breathing is usually used to produce low notes. However, the weakness is that the singer will easily run out of breath so it is not good to use when singing.

Health Info of Voice Organ - using human voice organ, the inner voice organ becomes its musical instrument. Therefore, the health aspect greatly affects the quality of voice in singing. If we have a fever, cough, runny nose or suffer from respiratory tract disorders, we cannot sing well, often we cannot speak. For that, avoid unhealthy lifestyles. Avoid cigarettes and drugs because they can damage the body and human voice organs.

b. Abdominal breathing

It is done by making the stomach large so that outside air can enter. This breathing is less effective for vocals because the air can quickly escape so that the lungs become weak and quickly tired. In abdominal breathing, the part of the body that expands is the stomach. This type of breathing can produce a very loud sound. However, it is not very good to use in singing.

c. Diaphragmatic Breathing

When the diaphragm is tense or straight, the chest cavity and abdominal cavity become loose and the volume increases. This increased volume causes the pressure to decrease so that air from outside can enter the lungs and the breath that is exhaled can be consciously controlled by the diaphragm and the muscles of the left side. This breathing is most suitable for singing because it can take as much breath as possible and release it slowly and regularly. In diaphragmatic breathing, air is drawn in as deep as possible and stored in the diaphragm. Then released slowly while singing. This breathing allows us to produce pure sound with long breaths.

After reading the concept of vocal techniques in singing, answer the questions below:

  • Explain the relationship between physical health, the techniques used, and the quality of the voice when singing.
  • Describe the uniqueness of the music that you observe in your area!
  • What do you think about people who don't care about their nation's arts and culture?
  • How to convey the understanding that art and culture are priceless treasures?

C. Vocal Practice

Vocal exercises can be done while singing, namely by exploring model songs (songs that are already known and used to learn the concept of musical elements). The model song is sung by changing the basic tone successively up and down.

Associating Activities

Sing the Apuse song, a regional song from Papua, in sequence by changing the basic tone higher, then gradually getting higher. Then, sing it with a lower tone, and get lower. After that, sing the Apuse song with other dynamics, for example staccato legato.

Practice the following Apuse song from Papua.

Practice the following Hymn of Love for Nature song.

D. Competency Test

  1. Knowledge
  2. Explain the 3 main requirements for having good breathing.
  3. Why do we need to master the correct singing techniques?
  4. Skills
  5. Sing one of the songs you master with the correct technique.

E. Summary

Art and culture are priceless treasures and are national assets, we can enjoy, preserve, promote to all parties so that we can achieve common prosperity. We should be ashamed if we consider our art and culture old-fashioned, while other nations want to learn angklung, gamelan, batik, traditional Indonesian food. For that, we must maintain and develop it.

The practice of singing in one voice is known as unison. In order to enjoy good voice quality, we should take care of our vocal organs and apply good singing techniques.

F. Reflection

Singing is an activity that is often done and heard in everyday life. In essence, everyone can sing because voice or vocals are the main element in singing. God gives us a voice so that we can speak and make sounds. Those of us who are blessed with the ability to make sounds must be grateful because God also gives some people the ability to not make sounds (deaf). Our gratitude can be shown by saying good words to others.

Speaking or making sounds also singing requires good breathing. For that, we have a responsibility, personal motivation and maintain God's gift in the form of respiratory organs by living a healthy life. This means not doing things that can damage respiratory health such as smoking. Breathing is a source of life, so do not damage breathing because it is the same as damaging the source of life.

Next, do a self-assessment by giving a check mark (P) in columns 1, 2, 3, and 4 according to your opinion.
