Around 1900 BC, from both Muslim, Jewish and Christian perspectives, Luth was one of the prophets sent by Allah to preach to Koum who lived in the land of Sadum and Gomorrah, Syria, Palestine. He is mentioned 27 times in the Koran. He died in Shafrah Village, Syam, Palestine.
Prophet Luth was the nephew of Prophet Ibrahim. His father was named Haran (Abara'an) bin Tareh, the brother of Prophet Ibrahim. Prophet Luth married a girl named Walihah, another opinion says her name was Ado. Luth had 2 daughters named Raitsa and Zaghrata.
Land of Sadum and Gomorrah, Sham, Palestine
Prophet Lut believed in Prophet Ibrahim (his uncle), accompanying him during his journey. When they were in Egypt they had a joint business in animal husbandry which was very successful.
Journey to the city of Egypt
One day his livestock grew rapidly until they could no longer be accommodated in the same place. In the end their business was divided, so Luth and Ibrahim separated. Luth moved to Jordan and settled in a place called Sadum (Sodom).
Prophet Luth was sent by Allah
The Sadum/Sodom society is a society with low morals and corrupt morals. They do not have a religion or even civilized human values. Sin and immorality are rampant in their social life. Theft, robbery and arbitrary treatment are incidents in their daily lives. The most prominent sin among them is homosexuality, both male and female (lesbian), for them it has become a culture.
A traveler who enters Sadum will not survive their harassment. If he carries valuable provisions, they will be confiscated and if he resists, he will be killed. Unless he has a beautiful appearance, he will become a source of contention or prey for the people of Sodom to vent their depravity.
Because of this social disease, Prophet Luth was appointed as HIS Messenger to lift them from the valley of disgrace, ignorance and error. Prophet Luth invited them to believe and worship Allah and abandon evil and vile habits, because they deviate from fitrah (created in pairs) and violate their nature. Prophet Luth has repeatedly warned them that Allah is the one who created them and the world around them. Allah does not approve of their deeds.
They are invited to do good deeds so that they will be rewarded and go to heaven in the afterlife, and will be kept away from the torment of hell. It was explained to them that these actions would be detrimental to themselves, because these actions would cause chaos and insecurity in the country so that each of them would not feel safe and secure in their lives. That was Prophet Lut's preaching to the people of Sodom.
However, moral collapse and moral corruption have become ingrained in their social relationships and the influence of lust and satanic persuasions has become so strong and dominated their actions, that the prophet Lut's preaching has no place in their hearts.
Luth's people / the people of Sodom were annoyed to hear Prophet Luth's preaching and advice, and asked him to stop his preaching or else he would be expelled along with his family and followers. That's when Prophet Luth began to surrender. He asked Allah to teach the people of Sadum a lesson in the form of punishment in this world before the punishment that awaits them in the afterlife.
Mysterious Guest
Prophet Lut's prayer was answered by Allah. Three angels were sent to him disguised as humans. They were angels who met Prophet Ibrahim with the good news of the birth of his second son, namely Prophet Ishaq (Ismail's younger brother), and told Prophet Ibrahim that they were messengers of Allah with the task of bringing down punishment on the people of Lut (the inhabitants of Sadum).
In the meeting, Prophet Ibrahim begged that the punishment be postponed for the people of Sodom, in case they regain their senses at the invitation of Prophet Luth (his nephew). In the meeting, Prophet Ibrahim also begged that his nephew, Luth, be saved from the punishment that would be sent down to the people of Sodom, the request was accepted by the angel who brought the punishment and guaranteed the safety of Luth and his family.
Arriving in Sodom, the angels disguised themselves as handsome young men, muscular and well-built. when they entered the city limits, they met a beautiful girl (daughter of the prophet Luth) who was getting water from a well. The young man (angel) asked the girl if they might be welcomed into his house as guests. The girl did not dare to make a decision so she negotiated with her family. So the young men left and went home quickly to tell her father (Luth).
Hearing the news about his daughter, Prophet Luth was confused, what answer should he give to them (the young men) who wanted to visit his house, because receiving handsome guests would invite the risk of being disturbed by his depraved community, even though he felt helpless in facing his depraved community.
Prophet Lut decided to accept the young men, and he surrendered to Allah and hoped for HIS protection. Then Luth went to pick up the guests who were waiting at the edge of the city. At that time the city of Sodom was already night and quiet (the residents of Sodom were already asleep).
Prophet Lut had ordered his wife and two daughters to keep the arrival of these young men a secret. Don't let it reach the ears of the Sodomite community. However, what was the power of the Prophet Luth's wife to leak it, so this news spread among Luth's group. A large number of men from Sodom, who were sexually blind, came to Prophet Lut's house, eager to give vent to their sexual desires, after not having any young children for a long time. They shouted, calling for Lot to release the young children, so that they could be given them.
Hearing their screams, Prophet Lut did not open the door for them and called on them to return to their respective homes and not disturb guests from afar who should be respected and glorified. Prophet Lut called on them to return to their wives and abandon their immoral and vile actions. Once again they claimed that Luth did not listen to their calls and even urged them to open the door.
Feeling helpless, Prophet Luth said frankly to his guests:
"In fact, I would no longer be able to stop these people if they rushed in. I do not have weapons and physical strength that can resist their violence, nor do I have family or respected relatives whose help I can ask for. I feel very disappointed, that as a host I cannot avoid disturbing the guests in my own house."
Hearing Prophet Lut's complaints, the young men told him the truth, that they were angels disguised as humans who were sent by Allah to bring down punishment and torment on their people because of all the vile and dirty evil and immorality.
The young man (the angel) told Prophet Lut to open the door of his house as wide as possible so that they (the people of Sodom) could enter freely. But unfortunately for them, when the door was wide open and the invader stepped in, suddenly their vision was dark and they couldn't see anything. the angels had blinded them, so that they rubbed their eyes.
As the situation in Luth's community was in chaos, the angels called out to Prophet Luth to immediately leave this village with his family and followers, because the time had come for Allah's punishment to be inflicted. The angels advised Prophet Lut and his family that on their way out of town not one of them should look back.
Prophet Luth left his house after midnight, with his family consisting of a wife and two daughters, walking quickly out of the city, not looking to the right or left according to the instructions of the angels who were his guests. However, the wife, who was a secret enemy for Prophet Luth, could not bear to leave her people. She was behind Prophet Lut's group, walking slowly, not as fast as her husband's pace, and she kept looking back because she wanted to know what would happen to her people, as if doubting the truth of the angels' threats that she had heard herself.
As soon as Prophet Luth and his two daughters passed the city limits of Sadum, when dawn broke, the earth shook violently under the feet of the people of Sadum, including the hypocritical wife of Prophet Luth. The shaking was then followed by a powerful earthquake accompanied by strong winds and hail of stones which destroyed the city of Sadum and all its inhabitants. There were scattered corpses cursed by God in the city of Sodom, and the city was destroyed. However, God still left behind the remains of the city's destruction, as a warning to the people who came after them when they passed through the former city of Sadum. Thus the greatness and verses of Allah were revealed as a lesson for His servants.
Research Facts Prove Its Truth
Fossils of the City of Sodom
The Genes of the Sunken City of Sodom
"When God rained sulfur from heaven on Sodom and Gomorrah, He overthrew them" (Gn 19:24-25). Throughout the Bab edh-Dhra archaeological site, evidence of fiery destruction was found, as in the western temple, in layers of ash. The walls tumbled due to earthquakes as well.
Buried Chunks of Sodom City Buildings
Charnel house A22 in the Bab edh-Dhra cemetery. During the last period of the Bab edh-Dhra occupation, the dead were buried in mud-brick structures called charnel houses. Five excavated examples have been found to have the same effect, that is, they were destroyed by fire as was the city. Careful stratigraphic excavation of A22 shown here, the largest of the five, reveals that the fire started in the roof and spread to the interior as the roof collapsed. This provides strong evidence that "God rained sulfur from heaven on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah" (Gn 19:24).
The story was illustrated by John Martin (a British painter) in his work
While in Israel, Ron Wyatt discovered the actual physical site (sulfur shot/sulfur blast) of "Sodom and Gomorrah", one of the five "Lost Cities" near Masda and the Dead Sea. There were numerous traces of sulfur that penetrated the ruined walls of Sodom and Gomorrah, which he took to the laboratory for study.
The story of Prophet Lut in the Koran
The Koran tells the story of Prophet Lut who tried to advise his people as in the following Surah Asy-Syuaraa (26:160-173).
"The people of Lot had lied to the apostles, when their brother, Lot, said to them: "Why are you not pious? Indeed, I am a trusted apostle (sent) to you, so fear Allah and obey me. And I never asked you for a reward for that invitation; My reward is none other than the Lord of the worlds. Why do you come to this kind of men among humans, and you leave the wives that your Lord has made for you, even you are transgressors?" They answered: "O Luth, indeed, if you do not stop, you will truly be among those who are expelled." Luth said: "Indeed, I really hate your deeds." (Luth prayed): "O my Lord, save me and my family from (the consequences of) the deeds they did." Then We saved him and all his family, except an old woman (his wife), who belonged to the group that remained. Then We destroyed the others. And We showered them with rain (stones), so the rain fell on those who had been warned."
The people of Luth hated and threatened to expel Prophet Luth because he invited some of them to abandon their despicable deeds and invited them to believe in Allah. So the punishment of destruction from Allah fell upon them, the story is as stated in Surah Al-A'raaf (7:80-84) below.
"...and (We have also sent) Luth (to his people). (Remember) when he said to them: "Why are you doing those faahisyah (abominable) deeds, which no one (in this world) has ever done before you?" Verily you came to men to release your lust (for them), not for women, in fact you are a people who transgress the limits. The answer of his people was nothing but saying: "Expel them (Luth and his followers) from your city This; in fact they are people who pretend to purify themselves. Then We saved him and his followers (who believed) except his wife (Prophet Lut's wife); he was among those who were left behind (destroyed), and We sent down rain (stones) on them; So watch what happens to those who sin."
