Don't be afraid to hear the words 'journal' and 'paper'. Just relax, guys. As long as you are connected to the internet, millions of scientific journals await you. However, it doesn't seem as easy as we think, you have to know how to find those journals. Here are some online references that you can access on the internet:


http://scholar.google.com/ Stand on The Shoulders of Giants. These are the words 'promised' by Google Scholar, a sub-directory and application from Google Inc. that provides hundreds of thousands of information about educational literature. You can search for various kinds of electronic books (ebooks), papers, theses, journals, articles and scientific literature just by entering the right keywords in Google Scholar. As if standing on the shoulders of giants, you can see the view of the entire city below you, aka all scientific journals that can be accessed in the virtual world.

http://search2.computer.org/advanced/simplesearch.jsp: Part of the IEEE Computer Society Digital Library. Search for computer journals here, both paid and free. For the free ones, you can download the PDF files. For the paid ones, you can only read the abstracts.

http://highwire.stanford.edu/: A division of Stanford University Library. Highwire has millions of collections of scientific literature from various fields of study. At the time of this writing (early April 2008), Highwire has 1128 journals and 4,726,272 articles published by more than 140 publishers. Very helpful for those of you who want to get free and paid scientific references that are quite comprehensive. Oh yes, don't forget to register first to get full access.

http://sciencedirect.com/: a scientific site that is quite popular among researchers. To download journals here, you must subscribe. However, several universities in Indonesia already have institutional access that can be utilized by the entire academic community of the university. Please confirm with your university.

http://www.byte.com: Free online computer articles. Contains various computer articles from computer experts around the world.

http://www.scholarlyexchange.org/hosted.html: A site about social science journals, hosted for free. You can also submit your journals here to be published on the internet, of course after meeting the terms and conditions of the ScholarlyExchange management.

http://www.doaj.org/: Directory of Open Access Journals. A site that provides trusted scientific journals that can be accessed for free. At the time of this writing (early April 2008), DOAJ claims they have 3310 journals and 1096 of them can be accessed through the search engine they provide. They also provide 177,199 scientific articles on their site.

http://www.freebooks4doctors.com/: This site contains information about medical books and journals. Some of them can also be downloaded for free. If you are a medical or biology student, you can try this site.

http://www.bioline.org.br/journals: A collection of free journals on medicine, pharmacy, health sciences, environmental sciences, virology and zoology. Scientific articles and journals are provided in HTML format. Some articles are also provided in PDF format.

http://www.arsip.lipi.go.id/: Mirror Server for Scientific Data. A mirror directory list created by LIPI for various online references of science and technology data. Covers various fields of engineering and natural sciences.

http://www.lib.upm.edu.my/onlinejour.html : a collection of online journal links from Universiti Putra Malaysia. Contains many scientific site references for various fields of study.

http://ocw.mit.edu/ : Open Course Ware, a free e-learning site created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Covers several engineering disciplines, natural sciences, and several social sciences.

http://jcmc.indiana.edu: a website owned by Indiana University that contains web-based journals about research in the social sciences that use computers as one of the research media.

http://www.library.ucsf.edu/collres/journals/: a website owned by the University of California, San Francisco that contains a catalog of online journals.

http://lib.ugm.ac.id/exec.php?app=site&act=jurnal: catalog of links to the scientific journal directory belonging to Gadjah Mada University.

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/: a site that contains free journal archives in the natural sciences and biomedical fields.

http://libra.msra.cn/: a site that contains a list of scientific journals about computers. Created by Microsoft Corporation.

http://portal.acm.org/portal.cfm: paid computer journal portal. To become a member, you can register as a student member for $42 per year.

In addition to those already mentioned, sometimes scientific journals can be found on a professor's personal homepage. If you enjoy surfing the websites of world-class universities, you will find the personal websites of each professor and not a few professors who are kind enough to share their work in the form of journals and articles that are no less cool than paid journals. The point is, don't run out of ideas to hunt for scientific journals. If your campus is kind enough, you can also borrow journals accessed by the campus, usually in hardcopy form that is sent once a month.
