The principles of graphic design for publications help determine how to use design elements in publications and websites. There are four principles of design: balance, emphasis, rhythm, and unity. The principles of design help you combine various design elements into a good layout.

1. Publication

The general stages of making a publication are:

Determine the layout including the format and paper size. A designer usually starts by creating a thumbnail. A thumbnail is a rough depiction of the layout usually made from paper scribbles.

Insert objects (images and articles) that have been prepared into the layout according to the previous plan.

2. Balance

Based on everyday visual experience, everyone can instinctively feel whether a design is balanced or not.

Balance is the same as two objects of equal weight. In relation to graphics, we talk about visual weight. Each element in a visual has a weight that is determined by the size of the darkness or lightness and thickness or thinness of a line.

3. Proportion

How to create the area, size, lines, and shape of an element based on its relationship to other elements.

4. Sequence

Usually the most influential factor is the article in it. Therefore, the size and layout of the writing including the title and story must be considered.

5. Emphasis

A layout needs a focal point to draw the reader's eye to the part that is considered important. Too many focal points will overpower what is being conveyed. Generally, a focal point will appear when an element looks different from the others.

6. Time

The following are common techniques used.

Place the table of contents as close to the cover as possible.

When a design is good and accepted, maintain it so that readers are not confused. Sometimes a refresh is needed.

Reduce or even eliminate jumps in document reading

Apply a certain style so that the design remains consistent throughout.
