10 Tips for Doing Psychometric Test Questions

One of the stages of employee recruitment is a psychological test. The uniqueness of this test is its “uncertainty”. Why? Because this factor can reverse the logical calculation of a person’s potential. For example, a graduate of the best university in the country with a GPA of 3.0 and experience as a teaching assistant, cannot pass the eye of the psychological test needle so that in the end he has to become an entrepreneur because he has never been able to pass the psychological test to be accepted to work in a company. Indeed, this is ironic, but it is a fact.

Psychological tests are indeed a unique phenomenon for job applicants. The author has also faced something similar, and then had to recover through the process of "learning by doing". The author is not a psychiatrist or psychology tester, but the following tips that will be shared, based on the author's experience when facing psychological tests, are expected to help reduce your failure in psychological tests:

1. Arithmetic Logic Test

This test consists of a series of numbers, aimed at determining your analytical ability to understand certain patterns/tendencies (in the form of a series of numbers) and then predict other things based on these patterns.

Don't just focus on the arithmetic series or geometric series of mathematical calculations, that is, don't focus on the first 3-4 numbers in the series, but sometimes you see the series as a whole because the pattern can be a sequence, sequential grouping or jump grouping.

Remember the time constraints. Don't get too caught up and fixated on just one question that you are curious to solve, skip to the next question because sometimes the question below it is easier to solve than the previous question.

You can practice this ability from UMPTN/SPMB test books for arithmetic/geometric series material.

2. Logical Reasoning Test

This test consists of a series of images, both 2 and 3 dimensions. What is being measured in this test is your ability to understand certain patterns/tendencies (in the form of images) and then make predictions based on your patterns:

Concentrate, be careful and thorough. Because the forms offered are almost similar although not the same.

3. Analog Verbal Test

This test consists of 40 questions containing synonyms/antonyms/analogs of a word. What is measured in this test is your logical ability towards a condition, to see how far you understand the cause and effect of a problem.

If you have problems with concentration and logic, you can bypass it by memorizing the questions and answers. Because several times the author faced this test, the questions given were relatively the same.

4. Kraeplien/Pauli

This test consists of a series of numbers arranged lengthwise (top-bottom) in the form of columns. Prospective employees are asked to add two adjacent numbers in a certain time in each column and write next to it. What is measured in this test is consistency, resilience, attitude towards pressure, ability to adapt, accuracy and speed in doing a job.

Never use a mechanical pencil in this test other than a regular pencil or pen, because this test is very time-bound. Mechanical pencils need to be reloaded when the granite tip runs out, this mechanism takes about 0.5-1 second. If you reload in 10 rows, it means you have lost 5-10 seconds.

Try to keep the number of numbers added up in each column stable. The result will be better than if you push yourself at the beginning of the test but rush in the middle and end of the test. Control yourself to save energy.

Never cheat on time or the results of your addition. This will be detrimental to you because cheating will take you a few seconds to decide and that means wasting time and making your addition graph unnatural.

The most important thing in the whole kraeplein test is concentration. Sometimes you will feel blank in the middle of the test, but you have to be able to get up and focus on the test again. For that, physical condition is very influential. Try not to stay up late and have breakfast before going to the test because this test model really drains your energy.

5. Wartegg Test

6. Draw A Man Test (DAM)

This test requires you to draw a person, then describe the person's age, gender and activities. This test is used to determine responsibility, self-confidence, stability and work resilience.

Draw the person in their entirety from head to toe, including facial details such as eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

Draw the person in the act of doing an activity, for example a farmer carrying a hoe, a young executive carrying a suitcase, etc.

7. Army Alpha Intelligence Test

This test consists of 12 questions containing a combination of numbers and shapes. One question is sometimes related to the previous question. What is measured in this test is your ability to understand and carry out instructions quickly and accurately.

Concentrate on what the narrator is saying, because the narrator will not repeat the instructions and the time given is very limited. Be patient, do not rush to answer, before the narrator finishes giving instructions.

The narrator will dictate the following questions: “Cross out the odd numbers in the boxes and cross out the even numbers that are written in circles, do it!” and on the answer sheet the following picture will be given:

8. Drawing a Tree

This test consists of tasks to draw trees with the following criteria:

  • Cambium (dicotyl)
  • Branching
  • Bear fruit

So you are not allowed to draw bamboo, banana, shrubs or other types of monocotyl plants.

In every tree drawing test that has ever been passed, the author always draws a jackfruit tree. Because the tree represents the type of dicotyledonous / cambium plant.

Even if you are not very good at drawing, try to draw in detail every component of the tree such as the stem, leaf shape, leaf density, fruit, roots and even tree lines.

For maximum results, photograph the tree, study the characteristics of the tree type, then practice your drawing skills by referring to the photo.

9. Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS)

This test consists of answer choices that best reflect you. This test is used to find out how much motivation, needs and motives a person has.

Answer each question honestly according to your condition, at least the closest one, because the questions will be repeated in the following numbers, so if your answers are not in sync, this will be detrimental to you. Your honesty is related to the reflection of your suitability for the job vacancy you are applying for.

Overall, this EPPS test is indeed the most difficult to adjust (trick), but at least there are some questions that can be adjusted to suit the job vacancy you choose. For example, when you apply to be a bank employee, choose answers that reflect honesty, orderliness, discipline and the ability to work in a team.

Due to the difficulty of the adjustment process for this test, the most practical way to take is to improve yourself (self improvement) in all things, set yourself up as if you were a professional in every behavior of your daily life such as: honest, keep promises, responsible and disciplined. Because the reflection of your positive mindset and behavior will be poured out without you realizing it in the test results.

10. Learning By Doing

Experience is indeed the best teacher. Make continuous improvements to yourself and your abilities, in every psychological test you face. For example: training yourself against mistakes/difficulties faced in previous psychological tests, rereading the entire psychological test material the night before facing the psychological test (refreshment) and preparing yourself as well as possible because basically you will always do psychological tests in a state of tension and pressure. Because with this mechanism, psychological tests are not a specter that you must avoid, but you will slowly become friends and familiar with psychological tests.
