About Photogrammetry (AP)

Photogrammetry is a method of measuring the earth's surface by utilizing digital photos or images, this concept originated from the idea of Leonardo daVinci in 1480, in his writings he said;

"Perspective is nothing other than the seeing of an object behind a sheet of glass, smooth and quite transparent, on the surface of which all the things may be marked that are behind this glass. All things transmit their images to the eye by pyramidal lines, and these pyramids are cut by the said glass. The closer to the eye these are intersected, the smaller the image of their cause will appear" [Doyle, 1964].

Meaning: "Perspective is the same as seeing an object behind a sheet of glass, smooth and transparent enough, all forms of signs on the surface can be included behind this glass. All forms of image delivery to the eye are depicted by pyramidal lines and these pyramid lines are cut by the glass sheet. The closer it is to the eye, the more the image/picture intersects, conversely the further away it is, the smaller the image/picture becomes."

In simple terms it can be explained that;

Perspective is any form of natural object displayed in a flat plane or relief. Perspective uses a mathematical system to project a 3D plane onto a 2D plane, such as paper or canvas. The word "Perspective" comes from the Italian "Prospettiva" which means "view picture".

"The Pyramid is the name I apply to the lines which, starting from the surface and edges of each object, converge from a distance and meet in a single point".

"Drawing is based upon perspective, which is nothing else than a thorough knowledge of the function of the eye".

[Gruner,1977], Although there was no actual evidence to build a working model, the principles of perspective and projective geometry formed the basis from which the theory of photogrammetry was developed. Many of daVinci's artistic contemporaries contributed to the science of projective geometry from a graphical perspective. Other scientists continued this work in mathematical projective geometry. For example, Albrecht Duerer, in 1525, using the laws of perspective, created a device that could be used to create correct perspectives.

Finally (Currently), Leonardo daVinci's theory was developed and applied in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology, complete education about UAVs is here.

  • JEFRY DEWANGGA Apr 13, 2015, 08:32:00 = Hmm I want to comment on how Leonardo da Vinci draws, he draws perspective with the help of lines. I think he is really a genius. Only a few people are able to draw that well, even though he lived in an era when technology was still minimal

Response 1

  • That's right, Mr. Jefry Dewangga, all fields of science that are related to images or involve images, then it cannot be separated from PERSPECTIVE.
  • Hello Phi ma Thank you very much, amen
