Learning Prepositions (LP)

LP:   SOLD

The position of the prepositional phrase can be between the subject and the verb. This makes test takers sometimes mistaken in identifying which is the subject of the sentence.

Example questions in the TOEFL test:

Five miles beyond the hills were a fire with its flames reaching up the sky.

                     A B C D

Question analysis

The answer you should choose is B because the word were above is not allowed.

The subject of the sentence is five miles. Five miles is included in the expression of quantity which requires a singular verb. Therefore were should be was.

Beyond the hills is a prepositional phrase. Although hills is a plural form that matches the word were, the hills above are included in the prepositional phrase, so hills are not the subject of the sentence.

Correct Answer

Five miles beyond the hills was a fire with its flames reaching up the sky.

In Indonesian: Five miles up the hill there was a fire burning that reached the clouds.
