Although color selection is a personal matter for each designer, there are actually several guidelines that can be used as a starting point before exploring further.
In the world of art, experimenting with various colors is a good thing and is highly recommended to go 'out of the box', however, it should still be based on good visual aesthetics and be attractive to the audience.
We start from the color wheel view:
Color wheel
There are several color schemes that we can create based on the color wheel above, there are several types of colors such as; monochromatic, analogous, complementary, triadic and neutral.
Monochromatic
The different color results of a color you choose. These different colors only depend on how much black is added to the color. The more black is added, the darker the secondary color will be.
Analog
They are colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel.
Triadic
Are colors that are taken regularly on the color wheel. As the name implies, triadic is taken from the word triangle, so the color drawing pattern must be triangular.
Complementary
Are 2 colors taken opposite each other on the color wheel.
Neutral
Is a color that is not on the color wheel. Such as black, white, grey, cream, brown, etc.
Color Contrast
After selecting a color scheme based on the above method, the next step that is no less important is understanding the importance of color contrast in a design. For example, please pay attention to the image below;
If we create a design, we should pay attention to the segment we are targeting. Maybe, using contrast like the example above can still be read by people aged 15-35 years even though it feels tiring to read it, but it will not apply to the elderly, therefore it is very important to pay attention to how the contrast works.
Color Harmony
Another thing we need to pay attention to is the placement of color aesthetics in the design we create. Don't be idealistic so that you use color without seeing how the color is captured by someone's eyes.
All of these are basic theories of coloring. The results depend greatly on how far a designer explores. Example:
What do you feel? then compare it with the example below:
It feels better to look at, right?
